Empowering Special Children Through Skill-Based Learning

Located within the Guru Nanak School Campus, the Velachery Centre is dedicated to suppo rting young adults aged 18 years and above with Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, and other developmental disabilities through inclusive education, vocational training, and life skills development.

We provide a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment where every learner is encouraged to build independence, confidence, communication, and practical life skills. Through individualized instruction, hands-on learning, therapeutic interventions, and creative activities, we help each student discover and develop their unique strengths.

The centre offers Guru Nanak College (GNC)-accredited certificate courses in Basic Computer Skills, Basic Retail Skills, and Basic Culinary Skills, equipping students with industry-relevant knowledge and enhancing their employability. Students also receive practical vocational training in areas such as culinary activities, arts and crafts, candle making, soap making, gardening, jewellery making, paper bag making, block printing, and personal grooming skills.

To promote holistic development, students participate in a wide range of co-curricular and therapeutic programmes, including Yoga, Music, Dance, Theatre Arts, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Physical Education, fostering their physical, emotional, social, and communication skills.

Students are also encouraged to showcase and sell products made during vocational training through exhibitions, community stalls, and fundraising events. These experiences provide valuable opportunities to develop workplace readiness, teamwork, social interaction, customer service, and entrepreneurial skills in real-world settings.

Jewellery Making

Students learn to design and assemble simple jewellery such as bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, enhancing fine motor skills, creativity, concentration, and hand-eye coordination while creating marketable products.

Block Printing

Students are introduced to traditional block printing techniques on fabric and paper, developing precision, creativity, colour coordination, and an appreciation for handcrafted textile art.

Weaving

Through basic weaving activities, students strengthen hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, sequencing skills, patience, and focus while producing simple woven products.

Diya Painting

Students decorate clay diyas using a variety of colours and designs, encouraging artistic expression, creativity, colour recognition, and participation in festive product creation.

Handmade Products

Students create eco-friendly products such as gift envelopes, paper bags, and cloth bags, promoting creativity, functional skills, environmental awareness, and opportunities for vocational training and income generation.

These skills can also support small-scale entrepreneurship and income-generating opportunities.

Skill Development

This segment focuses on essential life skills that enhance daily functioning, personal care, social interaction. personal independence, and day-to-day functioning.

Soap Making – Introduction to basic soap-making techniques

Grooming & Personal Care – Building routines around hygiene, dressing, and self-presentation

Candle Making – Step-by-step process of making candles with different shapes and colors
